Multiple Irish champion Michael Cullen will come out of semi- retirement to race in the Patch Tyre Equipment Fiesta Championship at Mondello Park on August 25th.Cullen is probably Ireland’s most successful saloon car driver, having won an incredible 8 titles between 1993 and 1996 before winning the European Ferrari Challenge twice and coming third in the British GT series before putting his racing on hold to concentrate on his business.
Fittingly, Cullen will be reunited with the Murray Motorsport squad, with whom he achieved most of his successes in Ireland and will drive their second car- recently raced by Richie Faulkner and used by John Denning to score a double win in the first meeting of the year.
Speaking this morning about his Patch Fiesta debut, Michael said “I never really retired- I just had no car to race! I ‘ve just had to concentrate on working our business through the recession and had no hope of raising the sponsorship required over the last five seasons. I have been cycling and playing squash instead. I was supposed to be doing the Sean Kelly 160k Cycle in Dungarvan on Sunday 25th until I spoke to Joe (Murray). I read Ian Beatty’s piece in the Irish Times about the Patch Fiesta Series and it sounded a lot of fun.”
